2008 WORKSHOP ONE March 29, 30
(SOLD OUT)
The first weekend class of 2008 will
focus on collage techniques and the
layering of rich collaged artworks. It’s
marginally preferable that you have had
some experience in this field, though
beginners will be able to participate
without too much pain. As well as plenty
of practical collage time, Nick will
engage everyone in a variety of art
discussions intended to provoke a better
understanding of nature of art.
2008 WORKSHOP TWO 28 April to 6 May
(SOLD OUT)
The big Spain extravaganza—for more
details see, WORKSHOP in SPAIN.
2008 WORKSHOP THREE May 31 to 1 June
(SOLD OUT)
This class is designed to go a little
deeper into the art of serious collage
(serious in this case means you’ll need
a bit more knowledge of the art), as
well as the roots of creative passion.
This workshop is for the slightly braver
or those who did the first workshop and
wish to enter a little further into the
forest. We’ll also be covering such
things as the murky edges between ‘form
and content’ and the ways to
circumnavigate creative block.
2008 WORKSHOP FOUR June 28, 29
(SOLD OUT)
Slightly different from the first two
classes, we’ll be focusing on both
images and words. Nick will be
discussing his mix of text and art and
how they came together in his books.
You’ll be doing a mixture of art and
writing, though Nick promises that
neither will feel remotely like being at
school! Without being ‘therapy’ there is
inevitably a small degree of personal
content to this workshop, so you will
need to bring both your honesty and your
sense of humour.

WORKSHOP in
SPAIN
with N i c k B a n t o c k
‘Delivered by Accident in
Twilight—The Art of Collage’
28 April to 6 May 2008
This is no ordinary workshop—we promise!
Set amongst the sweeping olive grove
hills of Southern Spain, midway between
Granada and Malaga this soiree is held
at the beautiful restored mill, ‘El
Molino’ and is, in truth, an excuse to
relax, eat, drink and learn about the
essence of creativity.
Hosted by Mike and Hillary Powell,
“Delivered by Accident…” highlights both
Nick’s mischievous creativity and Mike’s
culinary genius.
The daily sessions focus on making two
and three-dimensional collages from
found materials as well as Nick’s usual
mix of stamps, maps, documents, paint,
and other ephemera. Participants don’t
need to have a high level of artistic
skill, though creative experience won’t
hinder.
In addition to the art, the swimming
pool, the magnificent Mediterranean
cuisine, the unlimited supply of wine,
and Nick’s bedtime readings, we’ll also
be taking excursions to the Alhambra and
Ronda.
The all-inclusive package (not including
air fair) for ‘Delivered by Accident in
Twilight’ is $2990 for 8 nights.

The workshop itself: From collage
to assemblage and from the accidental
mark to storytelling, creativity is no
more than invention and a permission to
play. Whether artistically experienced
or a curious beginner this course is
designed to help you expand your vision.
In books like Griffin and Sabine and The
Forgetting Room I married art and
narrative and in Urgent 2nd
Class and The Museum at Purgatory I
teased and toyed with part-found
objects, I learned a lot. I learned that
there is a trick to seeing out of the
corner of your eye and making art from
accident. If I can, I hope to teach you
how to sneak up in twilight—surprising
yourself into creating a different art,
something half you and half Andalusia.
