Painting Gallery These paintings are my more recent larger works, the mediums include acrylics, oils, chalk pastels, metallic powders, inks and found materials on canvas and panel. In some cases there’s a strong figurative element, in others the content is more ephemeral. Most of us grew up with the idea that art was something you conceived and then executed, however for me, that method of working no longer feels comfortable, it’s just too prosaic. The brain may be a good tool for making sure you get on the right bus, but on a whole I’m inclined not to use it for life decisions. The same applies to art. I’ve noted that my best pieces come when the painting informs me what it needs, rather than the other way round. After 44 years of learning techniques and understanding materials, controlling line and color, thinking about subject and meaning I’m now finally letting go and allowing myself to simply trust the process. My job description has moved from creator to facilitator—a role that has become so much more interesting because I have no idea what is going to emerge. |
