My only experience of Paris is the lovely new Charles De Gaulle airport, navigated with a disgruntled photographer returning to New York from Venice. Your story reminds me of a friend, on his way through Europe after spending a year teaching English in Japan. He found himself short of funds in Paris and picked up work as a busboy in a Japanese restaurant. If a language barrier arose in the restaurant, people would turn to the white boy bussing tables for help, but he didn't speak a word of French.
