So strange that I was having this internal conversation about a strange funk that I was experiencing just before I switched on the computer and read your comment. I took a day off to recuperate from an excess of fun time, even my last day at work was hosting a party. Last week I listened to great live music from the Emperor concerto to the Bad Plus, socialized with fun people, enjoyed some new experiances working outside my usual realm. This all left me with a need to just snooze the day away and do absolutely nothing of worth. Apart from that though, as I was treading away at the gym I watched one TV monitor with a decorating show , on the other monitor was a soundless picture of the devastation going on in the middle east. I wondered if much of the activity in which we participate is a mad attempt to live in spite of constant dangers around us. Unless you are courageous and driven enough to get directly involved with changing the world, if we thought too long and hard about our basic helplessness in the face of it all it would be difficult to face the day. I take refuge in the idea of art as a common ground where humanity may meet and enjoy each others gifts and differences. But still I'm haunted by the the question - when. When will we be ready for a quantum leap into an evolved species with remarkable creative gifts. I guess the trick is to balance activity with reflection and awareness that everthing matters.
