Chains of correspondence can be tricky. You want them to make you stronger, not tie you down (or up as the case may be). I hope you also are open to letting your teacher evolve into a new role as she changes from your HS teacher to a what? Friend? Advisor? Confidante? Mentor? Kindred Spirit? You are the one destined to grow and evolve as you enter college, the one more likely to have your eyes opened to more of the world, the one more likely to have new experiences to write home about. Her life is more set in the everyday environment of HS that you are evolving out of and beyond. Many times the differences in life stages and amount of change each is undergoing can mean people grow apart as their common experiences lessen. But it does not have to. If you realize that you are at different points in your life - you are change personified while she is stability grounded in a world that you know well, you can have the right expectations. The problem usually arises when one is changing and writes volumes while the other is not and does not. Look beyond the common school experiences that brought you together and find the essence of what will keep you corresponding. If you let that go, the chain will break. Hard but not impossible to catch hold of again. You are right that not many can say that they will have a relationship with their HS English teacher forever. I hate to say that not many would want to these days. Rare, yes. But it is not the subject of English that connects you nor the verb of teaching. Friendships can last moments, months or a lifetime. Kindred spirits, as you seem to be, last while acquaintances falter easily and fade. Remember you gotta work the magic to keep the magic. ~ A penny for your thoughts?
