Can a brush paint in defense of the light by dipping into viscous colors? One extreme calls forth the other. The means and the end and the beginning (the paint, the picture and the intent) are all part of a whole process. The contrast of light and darkness reveal what each is. Knowing how to mix the two together produces gray, the color of wisdom. Does your hero have the wisdom to paint? If he wants to "make his brush a sword, in defense of the light", does he have the courage to step out of the darkness and into the light?
