Having recently finished Morning Star (Thank you, Mr. B, and my compliments on another triumph), I was struck by this news item from Nature...it seemed a timely little manifestation of the circle closing. The oldest known examples of figurative art (30,000 yrs old) were discovered in Germany. Along with other animal figures was a Lowenmensch or Lion Man - an upright humanoid figure with the head of a lion. (Its quite lovely...theres a picture of it at http://www.nature.com/nsu/030901/030901-6.html ... Its an enduring symbol, almost an archtype, I suppose, perhaps as much now for representing the innate creativity of humankind as for its original meaning.
