"Who owns the copyright: the artist, or the public by way of the (U.S., in my case) Postal Service? " This I can answer. The artist owns the copyright to the original art piece and sold the right to reproduce the image to whom ever. Unless whom ever also purchased the copyright in which case they own the image and can do anything with it. For example if you buy one of my art pieces you own it but can not reproduce the images on t-shirts, coffee mugs, what ever and sell them without my permission. If you also purchase the copyright from me then you could plaster it all over the world and I could not stop you. I am not sure which route the postal service takes though. As far as owned by the public by way of the Postal Service, that's like saying you can have a picnic on National Guard Armory grounds any time you like, honest. smiles - Halcyon
