The usual patroness
seated quietly
in her chair...the evening
uneventful.
He was expected
to arrive
momentarily.
She waited.
It was a large
bookstore. Wrapping
'round the block.
Chairs everywhere.
Suddenly
a tall slim woman
took the stage.
Apologized.
Said the actress
would not be appearing
with Mr. Bantock and who
might like to read?
She raised her hand.
The owner nodded.
She mounted the stage
and Nick arrived on schedule
He read Griffin
She read Sabine.
The audience rose
to its feet.
The author bowed.
She too. They were
photographed. It happened
last night. She did not dream it.
That woman,
the lucky one,
you've guessed by now,
was me.
