My old cottagey apartment in my pre-marital days was all soft colors, soft cushions, random collections of antiques, oddities, memorabilia, and funky curiosities. When it became neccesary to combine households with two artists all into a casual modernity and bright colors, and all of us having an aversion to a decorated look, we had to take a long look at our surroundings and decide what we would bring into our new life. I passed on the family heirlooms and jewelry that belonged to my last marriage to my daughter, weeded out the many book titles that were duplicated in our libraries or the books that no longer held relevance, negotiated the things away that either side could stand from each other's environments, and started to add pieces that would define our new life together. Quite a process, physically, mentally, emotionally and psychically. I must say that the resulting mishmash is really a rather cozy and distinctive work in progress. Somewhat Bantocky. actually.
