In a conversation with a friend this morning, it occurred to me that the arrangement and furnishing of her house were in fact symbolic of her state of mind, not so much in the Chinese home decor trend, but more in a dream interpretation way. This led me to a feeling that many of the institutions, objects, and relationships I had with people were as much symbolic as real, sometimes more symbolic than real. It was an Alice Through the Looking Glass feeling.
