Well, it's the time of year where the days get noticeable shorter. The rain has started, but because it's early into the season nobody seems to mind. Today is crisp and fresh (and dry). The chestnuts still have their spines. The crowds have finally left the west end, and I have English Bay all to myself most mornings. The city is gearing up for the Film Festival, Writers Festival and other fall events. The little cinema on Water St. called the Blinding Light has closed, so it looks like I'll have to find some different venues this year. MacLeod's Books have opened another store right across the street from their original location. Granville St. remains intact, with it's seedy mix of street kids and tourists. The big news on Commercial Drive is the Da Kine Café. They've has been openly selling pot, and consequently, were set upon by a riot squad of Vancouver Police. It caused a slight inconvenience for a day, but now they're open and back in business, proudly wearing their defiance. On my way to the pub last night, I took a tour of East Hastings. The drama was unbearable; dozens of one act shows all going on at once. Separate, but somehow all connected. Then finally to the Waldorf, where the house band played the same Rod Stewart song over and over (and over) again.
