Sorry to join the discussion so late, and very sorry about Pen's accident. I wanted to follow up on Foxfire's suggestion about henna (which is inspired) with a note about a wood and reed dye I've come across (used by basket weavers, and others working with reed, rattan, etc....I'm using it to stain wooden book covers) Lots of different colors...the brand name is JACQUARD, and I found it at a shop which sells mostly basket-weaving supplies...If you use henna or a color stain, you'll want to sand off the existing finish down to bare wood, I think...and I think that the wood probably isn't pine, which is rather soft, (and would really soak up the stain)but more likely ash, oak, maple or birch...all hardwoods which should take color nicely. Good luck!
