Okay, let me preface this by saying the people I have in the past and do usually correspond with now don't just send a plain, address-covered envelope. They are like me - they know that you CAN and many times MUST judge a book by it's cover, and that the mere intrigue brought on by viewing the outside (in my case, both sides) of the envelope serves as a hint, beit however illusive, of what lies beneath the carefully embellished flap. A secret note? An upside down stamp? There are many forms of communication that go beyond the letter itself, and when I read what Nick wrote in Urgent 2nd Class, the bit about using the originals, I actually gasped (I was in a theatrical mood anyway, so the gasp wasn't too out of place - don't worry, no smeared mascara or raw silk pillows were harmed in the making of the miniseries ...)Using original postcards: That's what I'm talkin' 'bout! If you had read the book, you would have known ... maybe not agreed, but you would have known. What perils a bottle of glue may bring to the sacredly kept remnant of days gone by ... not saying that I have never and will never use originals, but with technology being what it is, why not preserve the precious past, even if it's someone else's past?
