I ran across something I have been meaning to post . . . the listing of the seven veils which masks our pure, clear intellect - it seems ot me that art may be one vehicle to penetrate these veils. . . ********* so first here they are . . .1. The Veil of Imprinting (which is a pattern established early in life and creates an automatic response - like the way we automatically respond "fine" when asked how we are). . . . 2. The Veil of Parroting (which seems is the repeating back what we have been fed - school is a good example of this process) . . . 3. The Veil of Social Conditioning (which is responding based on what we think is socially acceptable or expected) . . . 4. The Veil of the Clever Show (which is the habit of coming back with the witty or sharp reply) . . . 5. The Veil of Ego Reification (which is the habit of repeating patterns that are good at gaining social approval) . . . 6. The Veil of The Spinning intellect (which is the onslaught of many ideas so you are left spinning around - like when you get insomnia) . . 7. The Veil of Massive Confusion (which is a lack of clarity because of paying attention to too many sources of information) . . .[ref: Pamela Eakins] ********* so second, it seems one way to slip past all these veils is to do a ju-jitsu move on them . . . To find a way or method for which there is no preconditioning (imprinting), no fed answers (parroting), no pre-set expectations (social conditioning), no ground for showing cleverness or gaining social approval, and no overload of ideas and information sources. ********* so third, what works to do this? Images would be a visual way to get around a lot of it . . . Play would seem to be another way. Would simple Truths and/or Beauty be other ways? Zen koans? Nonsense poems? Childrens fairy stories and folktales? Music? Socrates questions? Whada ya guys think? (OK - Polly wants a cracker comes to mind . . . but seriously . . .shat other tools are there out there? What do you think works best and what have you tried? Are there universal methods, or are the tools culturally based (aka zen koans work best/only with eastern enculturated intellects)? ********* so forth, are the common ingredients that make these methods work? What are they? . . . . - Al (having one of those "Anyone seen my car?" moments from Twister . . .)
