The thing I remember most about Paris is descending beneath the city to walk through the underground catacombs, where after Paris's cemetaries were full, bodies were exhumed in mass and stored below the city streets. Bones were neatly stacked and categorized, some creating patterns with artistic flourish. As I walked with a small group in the dark dampness, I thought about the untold stories and the unknown names of these men and women who used to walk above in the city of light centuries ago, but now reside in the dark-below, molding over in the forgotten recesses of a glorious city, with only the sound of the slow drip, drip, drip, to keep them company.
