In times like these it becomes a neccesity to seek out and acknowledge beauty and the truth it reveals. At a similar moment , I wandered through the extraordinary galleries of the Uffizi amazed at paintings and sculptures I had only seen reproduced in glossy art books; the Carraci Baccante, erotic in the extreme, the exquisitly veiled Lippi Madonna, the serene Selene Luna in the stunning sculpture gallery with an ornate gold and white ceiling, and went back again and again to gaze at the Veronese Sacred Family perfectly balanced and mysterious. I went to the end of the U shape of the museum and gazed out of the windows as evening descended on the Arno and the ancient city with thousands of tales of love and treachery, generosity and madness. I had to put my hand to the window frame to steady myself, my senses being saturated with created and natural beauty and illustration after illustration of the drama that life unfolds. We are all artists who's creation is this life. We need to understand that it is our thoughts that materialize into our environment. Perhaps if in difficult times we turn to meditate on the objects that remind us of the best of our endeavors, the things that amaze us and make us smile, we can advance a bit in the creation that is humanity.
