From your fondness for Neruda and from your own writing I can tell that you have a keen ability to connect to metaphor. Think of your dreams as an extention of that connection and the answer starts to become clear. Your dreams are allowing you to briefly live within the metaphors that you read about, write about and live. Love is an ocean. Friendship is a sand dollar.
