Poetry for the masses is alive and well in the lyrics of many forms of popular music, you mentioned Santana and obviously rap. There are plenty of wonderful poets churning out poems to keep us thinking and feeling (Matt in Mass is a poet, I seem to remember.) It's a buffet, you can take what you like. (For example, I'd pass on the Beethoven and take a serving of Bach.) Poetry predates written language. In part, it was a way to pass forward history, religion and culture between individuals and generations, a mnemonic device. Since Gutenberg, our minds and lives are not the same? But back to music. I remember reading something that said professional musicians experience music differently and use different brain structures to process the sounds. I think less musically educated people (myself) actually respond more emotionally to music. Maybe there's a kind of tradeoff between the intellectual, emotional and sense perception of a given experience. Or maybe some experiences bring on a hightened ability to perceive on many levels. Like a really nice creme brulee.
