I just remembered a real item that is like some of the objects in the Museum at Purgatory. An anthropologist doing fieldwork in Zambia made the aquaintance of a shaman/healer. Western culture had to some extent penetrated the society and as a result, this healer carried a doctor's bag from the time when doctors made house calls. Within this bag was a black telephone through which he had conversations with the spirits, who advised him on the ailments and recommended curative action.
