Good thread. This weekend I had the chance to see some of Nicks work in person. The effect is totally different. I had no idea they were so three dimensional. The best thing for me is without a doubt, the inspiration. The thoughts that run through my mind as I get so close my nose is almost touching the glass. I study every little detail, then I back twenty feet away. Then sometimes I squint. My own collections start to rearrange themselves in my mind and I can envision some new art of my own. My next project is going to involve many, many layers of paper. The feeling I get from 'liberating' banners, or rappelling of a bridge, or spending days underground would probably be best described as equal but opposite. What I mean is that when I'm in an artistic mood, I could lock myself inside for weeks. For me, it's very internal. When I'm exploring, I don't want to analyze or deconstruct. I want to DO. I want to act on instinct. I'm very jealous of people that don't have this distinction. Also, I'd just like to offer up a special thanks to Sandra for a very personal and annotated tour of Nick's work. I hope the broken glass didn't hurt anything.
