Do you plan on him using his brush to create art that gently presents the truth or one that knocks the viewer over the head with the canvas and stretches them out cold on the studio floor? ((The reason I ask is that it is hard to realize who you are when you are unconscious.)) Is it a permanent change in the art patrons he seeks? Or some showy but ineffectual swashbuckling (aka paint daubbing)? Have you ever used neon colors to paint a pastel picture? When you want sharp slashes in the texture of the paint, do you use your sable brush or a paint trowel? When you want to trim your overgrown hedges, do you hack at them with a machete or paint them out with your brush? An artists bush is light and soft for a reason, just as a sword is heavy and has a cutting edge for a reason. You want to choose the right tool for the right job and wield your tool with mastery for the most impact. Artists use brushes and images, warriors use swords and battle plans. Where does your heros area of mastery lie?
