Matt, I use whatever fits. Usually I get images in my head from listening to the music first, then go on to make the art. I've used songs with a cultural/political bent a couple of times. (Rebecca Riots "Take a Knife", and Cheryl Wheeler's "If It Were Up To Me"). Once, while listening to a Hildegard von Bingham CD just to check it out, I happened to be looking through a clip art book of angels down through the ages. I came to a part in the book that had a whole section of pictures from Gustav Dore's Angels, Good and Bad, from "Paradise Lost," Dante's "Pergatorio" and "Paradiso," etc. (I don't even lean that way). When I was done looking at the book, I kind of woke up from this strange little trance. I realized I had to send THAT one. It fit so well! That's all I've done, I think. Otherwise, I just send music not as a soundtrack, but just as accompanying mood stuff with the mail. I heard a quartet play Ginastera (sp?) and I was flooded with images for a black and white movie I want to make, and I'm not a filmmaker! Ahh, music and art. Thanks for asking!
