I began by buying any remainder or second hand pop-ups I could find. I then pulled them apart to see how they worked. I got old cereal boxes, masking tape, glue stick, a small pair of sharp scissors and then I went to work trying to recreate the basic mechanics. As for the artwork--thats a little tougher!
