Nick's talk at Fireside Books was brilliant. I hesitate to type that first sentence because it makes me sound like a gushing fan (which I guess I am to some extent), but that's exactly the word that's required. He chatted about fact versus fiction, and read us several excerpts, then asked us to judge how much was true. There was talk of gargling Gargoyles, pink faced Englishmen with strange tan lines, an the illegitimate history of spinning tops. And of course, Duende made his required appearance. For this first time, I could relate the concept of Duende to my own life, back in the Meadow. For me, it's the feeling that we are nothing more then borrowed, slowed energy. It's not the thought that the earth will cease to turn when I'm done, but the knowledge that it will turn differently.
